Your new home's windows are completely bare

New construction: not a blind, not a rod

If you bought new construction, there's nothing on the windows. Not a blind, not a shade, not a curtain rod. Every window in the house is a clear pane of glass, and that includes your bedroom, your bathroom, and whatever room you were planning to collapse in.

We see it constantly, because Kootenai County keeps growing and the subdivisions keep going up. Check your builder's inclusions before closing: window coverings may not be part of your package. Planning ahead gives you time to choose without making every decision on moving day.

Resale: check what is staying

With a resale home, check which window coverings are included before you plan replacements. What is there may work well—or you may inherit aging blinds, faded fabrics, or treatments that don't give you the privacy you want.

Either way, you end up doing what everyone does — a run to the big box store for a pile of paper temporary shades, and an evening you don't have spent sticking them up crooked.

How long do custom window treatments take?

Custom window treatments are not something you take home the same day. They're built to the measurements of your specific windows, which is exactly why they fit and look the way they do.

Custom shades: about four weeks

Most custom shades run about four weeks from the day you place the order to the day we install them. The cellular ones are worth the wait for more than looks — the Department of Energy has measured how much cellular shades cut heat loss through the glass, which matters in a North Idaho January.

Shutters and custom drapery: up to eight weeks

Shutters and custom drapery can take up to eight weeks. They're a bigger build, and the extra time goes into the product — Norman and Alta don't pull a shutter off a shelf, they build yours.

These are planning estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates. We'll discuss current lead times for your selections before you order. But it does leave you with a gap — a month or more of bare glass in the rooms where you want it least.

We cover your windows for free while you wait

When you order with us, we bring temporary shades and put them up ourselves, at no charge, in the rooms that matter most: bedrooms, bathrooms, and your main living spaces.

No store run. No standing on a chair with a box of adhesive strips at the end of a long day. We'll coordinate temporary-shade installation with you, and when your real treatments arrive, we pull the temps down and haul them off.

It's a small thing. It also happens to be the small thing people thank us for the most.
